Virgil Loyd Stuber, Jr. of Eureka, a dedicated farmer and veteran, completed his final turn in the row on Friday, October 17, 2025. He passed away at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka, at the age of 91.
He was born on March 26, 1934, in Virgil, Kansas, the oldest of twelve children of Virgil Loyd, Sr. and Alice Irene (Moore) Stuber. He was born in the Virgil area and raised in the Climax area, attending local schools. Virgil enlisted in the United States Navy during the Korean War and served aboard the USS Grasp (ARS-24) with honor and dignity. He was honorably discharged on February 28, 1955.
Following his discharge, Virgil served on the Eureka Police Department. He married Nancy Jane Meredith in Eureka on January 9, 1956, and they had six children. The couple relocated to Mills, Wyoming, where Virgil spent 13 years working in oil with Halliburton while simultaneously running a farm and raising Angus cattle. Upon their return to Eureka in 1969, Virgil ran a dairy near Severy. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to become a part-owner of the Eureka Sale Barn and later to operate Sun Cementing and Acidizing. Despite selling his businesses, he happily continued farming and raising cattle until his last days. He grieved the loss of his beloved wife, Nancy, who passed away on September 7, 2022.
Virgil was an active volunteer for Greenwood County 4-H and Rural Water, and he served on the Fair Board working diligently to bring horse racing back to Eureka.
He is survived by two children: Todd Stuber of Beaumont; and Roxane Stuber-Wagner of Denver, Colorado; two grandchildren: Chad and Brett; one great-grandchild; and four sisters: Barbara Butler, Sherry Williams, Julie Clopton, and Peggy Hawthorne, all of Eureka. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Nancy; one son, Rod Stuber; three infant children; and seven siblings: Billy Dean Stuber, Edward Aaron Stuber, Fredrick Donald Stuber, Jerry "Jack" Stuber, Robert Dwight Stuber, Terry Lee Stuber, and Roger Ray Stuber.
Cremation has been effected. Graveside memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, October 24, 2025, at Greenwood Cemetery, Eureka, with Pastor Charlie Kaupke officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2712. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home, PO Box 595, Eureka KS 67045, which is overseeing arrangements. Condolences may be left for the family online, at koupfunerals.com.
