Michael John "Mike" Mehegan, a man known as much for his unwavering faith as his impressive physical strength, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at his home in Eureka at the age of 72.
Born on November 4, 1953, in Long Beach, California, Mike was the son of James Vincent and Earlene (Rushton) Mehegan. After graduating from Lakewood High School, he worked in Colorado before eventually settling in Eureka. In 1999, Mike began his career with the Eureka City Water Works. Through hard work and dedication, he rose to the position of plant operator, a role he held with pride until his passing.
Mike was a powerhouse of discipline, both in spirit and body. A fixture at "The Gym," he was often found pushing his physical limits, maintaining the strength and physique of a much younger man. This same dedication translated to his spiritual life; he was a deeply spiritual man and a pillar of the Eureka Seventh-day Adventist Church. In his quieter moments, he enjoyed the precision of mowing his lawn, as well as other people’s, and was an avid collector of vintage trucks. He leaves behind a legacy of love amongst his family and all his friends.
He is survived by his parents: James Mehegan of Anaheim, California, and Earlene DeVoe of Eureka; his siblings: Margaret “Maggie” Bautista of Eureka; Erlinda “Squeak” Blackman of Eureka; Julie and husband, Warren Robbins of Eureka; and Bill and wife, Dawn DeVoe of Holly Springs, North Carolina; eight nieces and nephews: Robert Herman, Lynn Olson, Shad Blackman, Tina Campbell, Levi Vinson, Christian DeVoe, Dane DeVoe, and Clare Harvey; seven great-nieces; one great-nephew; and numerous cousins and extended family.
Memorial services will be held at 12:00 P.M., Friday, April 17, 2026, at the Eureka Seventh-day Adventist Church, with Pastor Francois Erasmus officiating. Cremation has been effected. A private family inurnment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Eureka.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Eureka Seventh-day Adventist Church or to the American Heart Association. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home, PO Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045. Condolences may be left for the family online at koupfunerals.com.
