Listen to Obituary

Marlene Jewell Smith, age 78, of Toronto, Kansas, passed away surrounded by the warmth of the family she spent a lifetime nurturing on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at her home. A devoted matriarch, fierce protector, and constant provider of open arms and hot meals, Marlene’s heart was always widest open for those who needed a place to belong.

She was born on July 16, 1948, in Pomona, Kansas, the daughter of George Owen and Catherine (Holler) Fulton. Raised in the Holton and Nickerson areas, Marlene attended local schools before meeting the love of her life, Clyde Smith, in El Dorado when she was 23. They were united in marriage on January 18, 1973, in Miami, Oklahoma. Together, they raised eight children and as well as caring for and nurturing many others.

Marlene embraced her role as the wife of a carpenter and pipeline welder, establishing their first home in El Dorado. Though they left Kansas in 1978 and traveled frequently for work, they eventually settled back in Toronto, where Clyde bought her the big home she had always wanted. Marlene poured her heart into making it a warm, welcoming haven. A natural caretaker with an open door for everyone, she was fiercely dedicated to her family, instilling in her children the values of love and devotion.

In 2000, Marlene earned her GED and went on to complete her CNA certification. She devoted several years to healthcare, providing compassionate care both in medical facilities and through in-home care services.

A woman of deep faith, Marlene was devoted to God and shared His message generously. She served as church secretary at Good News Baptist Church in Toronto until its closure, and she found immense joy in leading adult Sunday school and women’s Bible study groups.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Clyde Smith, of the home; eight children: Michael T. Wark and wife Shara of Council Grove, Kansas; Martin O. Wark of Toronto; Clyde J. Smith, Jr. of Toronto; Kellie D. Dockers of Yates Center; Matthew David Smith and wife Sabrina of Toronto; Misty L. Buchanan and husband Steven of Toronto; Ty McKenzie and wife Brandi of Wichita; and Chad McKenzie of Wichita; 26 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren on the way; and one brother, Stephen Fulton of Pensacola, Florida.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents; three grandchildren: Joshua Leon Smith, Christian Michael Dockers, and Jennifer Leann Dockers; two brothers, George Owen Fulton and Paul Fulton; and two infant twin sisters.
