Danny Coon, known by his friends as “Coondog”, died peacefully at his home in Eureka surrounded by his family, on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at the age of 66.
Danny, a lifelong resident of Eureka, was born in Eureka, KS, on October 3, 1958, the son of Gilbert and Helen Weldene (Lozier) Coon. Raised amidst the familiar landscapes of Eureka, he attended local schools, worked at Jim’s IGA, forged lifelong bonds and graduated with the Eureka High School Class of 1976. From the moment he received his diploma, Danny embodied diligence and commitment, immediately diving into the workforce with a steadfast spirit that would define his professional life. He worked in the oilfield most of his life except for the time he spent working as a pipefitter for Blackburn Construction. He traveled to various refineries and chemical plants around the United States during his employment with Blackburn. Danny later worked for Marshall Oil as a pumper until his health deteriorated.
On March 11, 2000, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Cathy Messick, in Raymond, Kansas. Together, they built a warm and loving home in Eureka, where they raised their beloved daughter, Calie.
Beyond his dedication to his work, Danny's true joy lay in the simple, profound moments spent with his family. He cherished every opportunity to be with them, and it was one of his greatest pleasures to teach Calie the art and patience of fishing and hunting, and the satisfaction of simple mechanics, creating cherished memories that will endure. Outside his unwavering devotion to his family, Danny's heart held a special place for his beloved pets, finding comfort and companionship in their presence. A good day was when he could take his dog to the lake. Danny also relished the simple pleasure of a good, cold beer, often shared with friends as they swapped stories and laughter, making every gathering a memorable occasion.
Danny is lovingly survived by his devoted wife, Cathy, of the home; his cherished daughter, Calie Coon, of El Dorado, KS; his beloved yellow lab, Kahlua; his two brothers: Gary and his wife, Trish Coon, of Eureka, KS; and Ron and his wife, Pat Trimble of Joplin, MO. He also leaves behind a wide circle of adoring nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends who will miss his quiet strength and warm presence. He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings: Ann Coon, James Trimble, Jerry Trimble, and Johnny Trimble, all of whom he now joins in eternal rest.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, July 19, at the Half Dollar in Eureka. Cremation has been effected. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Greenwood County Wild Kansas Association. Donations may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home, P. O. Box 595, Eureka, Kansas 67045, which is overseeing arrangements. Condolences may be left for the family online at koupfunerals.com
