Eda Fern Mitchell Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Eda Fern (Matlock) Mitchell of Hamilton, KS, died on June 6, 2017 at the Eureka Nursing Center at the age of 89. She was born on March 10, 1928 in Payne County, OK, near Cushing. She was the daughter of Jesse Hubert and Ethel Anna (Booth) Matlock. Eda and her family moved to Greenwood County in Kansas at the age of 3 months. Eda completed her junior year of high school in Madison, KS. Later in her married life, she went back to school and earned her GED. She was united in marriage to Merle S. Mitchell on September 19, 1946 in Emporia, KS. He preceded her in death on July 28, 1996. Eda was a member of the Hamilton United Methodist Church in Hamilton, KS and made her confession of faith on May 1950. She was a bookkeeper for the family oil business and later attained her CNA certificate to work in the hospital. She belonged to many bridge clubs in Eureka and was a member of the UMW at Hamilton and DAV Auxiliary. She is survived by her two sons, Standiferd (Stan) Mitchell and wife, Linda of Eureka; and Douglas (Doug) Mitchell and wife, Sue of Hamilton; four grandchildren: Chris Mitchell of Amarillo TX, Jason Mitchell of Sabetha, KS; Brook Mitchell of Eureka, KS and Aimee (Mitchell) Landgren of Emporia, KS; ten great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren; four sisters, Doris Crowell, Ann Garr, Kay Mason, and Betty Griffith, and one brother, Delbert Matlock. She was preceded in death by her husband Merle, her parents, a grandson, Cameron, five brothers, and one sister. Funeral services are set for 10:00 A.M., Saturday, June 10, 2017, at Koup Family Funeral Home in Eureka, with Pastor Kevin Lawrence of the Climax Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Janesville Cemetery in Hamilton. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Hamilton United Methodist Church in Hamilton, KS.
