Anat Carlene Hibbard

July 3, 1933 - March 4, 2003

A. Carlene Hibbard, of Eureka, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at her home. She was 69. Memorial services were held Monday, March 10, 2003 at Koup Family Funeral Home in Eureka with Reverend Alan Hunter officiating. Interment was in Highland Cemetery in Winfield, KS. Cremation was effected. A. Carlene Whitson was born July 3, 1933, in Winfield, daughter of Carl J. and Faye (Stevens) Whitson. She was reared in Winfield, attended city schools, and graduated from Winfield High School in 1951. On April 12, 1952, Carlene was united in marriage to Myron Claude Kennedy at the First Presbyterian Church in Winfield. To this union were born two children: Mark Steven Kennedy and Sue Ann (Kennedy) Swartz. They were later divorced. Carlene married Harold L. McGowan of Winfield, KS on October 28, 1965. They made their homes in Winfield and Manhattan before moving to Greenwood County in 1968. After a brief period in Emporia, the McGowans permanently moved to Eureka in 1974, where Harold engaged in the small engine repair business. Mr. McGowan died on October 2, 1985. On December 12, 1986, Carlene married E. A. “Andy” Hibbard. During their marriage, the Hibbards enjoyed trips throughout the United States, particularly in the American Southwest. After having made such trips, Carlene became fascinated with American Southwestern culture, a love that lasted throughout the remainder of her life. Andy Hibbard preceded her on January 13, 1997. Carlene was a Life Member of the Greenwood County Historical Society. Since 1999, she has been a member of the Board of Directors, serving in the capacity of Historian. She began volunteering her time and talents at the Greenwood County Museum in February 1995, and had been a “full-time” volunteer since that time. She played an active part in helping prepare for the opening of the new museum that year, and had fulfilled the role of office manager since that time. She was particularly proud of her part in maintaining the obituary indexes in the Society’s Research Center, and helped complete the indexing of obituaries contained in The Eureka Herald from 1940 to the present. Carlene was a nurturing and caring person. Not only did she go “out-of-her-way” in caring for her children and grandchildren, but she also took great care in feeding and caring for stray and hungry pets in her neighborhood. Carlene is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Sonja Kennedy, of Eureka, her daughter and son-in-law Sue Ann and Steve Swartz of Neche, ND, her sister Janet Macomber of Urbana, IL, her mother, Faye Whitson of Winfield, two grandchildren, Jeff Hokanson and Jon, and his wife, Jenni Hokanson, and her beloved pet Yorkshire Terrier, “Wiggy.” In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to the Greenwood County Historical Society. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home, P. O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045.
